Getting Started

On Your Lumberock Project

You probably have hundreds of great ideas for the perfect deck to match your home, and you probably have just as many questions. Which color will you choose? Will you have an elevated deck or a ground-level deck? Will it be attached to your home or will it be freestanding? How will you accessorize the space?

Choosing to use Lumberock® Marine Grade Decking is the first and easiest step on the road to owning the deck or dock of your dreams. Before you begin your plastic lumber project, carefully read our installation guidelines for a better end-result.

Step 1

PLAN & DESIGN

Before you begin, consider the layout, size, and design of your dock or deck. Think about:

  • The purpose of your structure (entertaining, lounging, waterside use, etc.)
  • The dimensions and shape
  • Local building codes and permits
  • The type of substructure (wood or metal framing)

Once you’ve finalized the design, visit your local municipal office for information regarding building codes and regulations, zoning restrictions, permits and inspections. We also recommend having your design reviewed by a licensed architect, engineer or local building official before you begin installation.

Step 1

GATHER MATERIALS

Ensure you have all necessary materials and tools before starting. You will need:

  • Lumberock deck boards
  • Hidden fasteners or screws
  • Joists and framing materials
  • Drill, saw, measuring tape, and level
  • Protective gear (gloves, safety glasses)

Step 3

SUBSTRUCTURE PREPARATION

A solid, properly spaced substructure is key to the longevity of your dock or deck.

  • Use joists spaced at a maximum of 16″ on center (12″ for commercial applications)
  • Ensure adequate ventilation beneath the structure
  • Verify the substructure is level and secure

Step 4

INSTALLING LUMBEROCK

Lumberock boards are easy to install with standard woodworking tools.

  • Place boards perpendicular to the joists
  • Use hidden fasteners for a clean look or top screws for a traditional installation
  • Leave appropriate spacing for expansion and drainage
  • Cut and trim boards as needed for a seamless fit
